Essential Living

Aromatic. Topical. Dietary.

Picture
Learning to use essential oils might be overwhelming in the beginning. One of the most simple ways to start is to use them aromatically. When the tiny molecules are released into the air (atomized) and fill your home with delicious aroma, it's hard to argue the proven benefits of aromatherapy. Botanical oils such as Lavender and Cedarwood have shown to aid in relaxation and may increase REM sleep. Oils such as Peppermint and Eucalyptus invigorate the mind as well as sooth irritated sinuses during allergy, cold, and cough symptoms. Oils such as Clove, Rosemary, and Cinnamon Bark kill *airborne microorganisms and support immune systems. Essential oils contain antioxidants and other constituents that will improve our overall health and wellness, simply by using them aromatically. Here are a couple favorite methods for aromatic use.

Ultrasonic Diffusers

Simple and convenient to use, your diffuser will soon become a member of the family you won't want to live without. Young Living provides a high quality humidifier, air purifier, atomizer, and aromatherapeutic device all in one. In fact, we've replaced all of our humidifiers, plug-ins, candles, and aerosols with ultrasonic diffusers and botanical oils. We have one in every main living area and bedroom, however one high-quality, atomizing, and cold-air diffuser is all you really need to get started.

The Basics of Diffusing:
  • add 3-4 drops (you can diffuse more once you're used to it) of your choice of oil into the water in the well of your diffuser
  • diffuse for 20-30 minutes (best for beginners) or leave it on continuously
  • wipe the metal plate with a small brush or q-tip and vinegar once a week to clean

Your Choice of Diffuser
The Premium Starter Kit includes your choice of one of a few different diffuser options. The price point of $160 includes your choice of either the Dew Drop design OR the Home (rose-shaped) design. Both are great choices for spaces approximately 300 square feet, while more options for larger rooms are available at higher price points, such as the Rainstone or Aria Diffusers.

The Home Diffuser combines a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer, and aromatherapy diffuser into one simple-to-use product that safely releases essential oils into the air to eliminate odors and create a relaxing atmosphere. Its ultrasonic technology breaks any mixture of essential oils and water into millions of microparticles, disperses them into the air, and activates the powerful plant constituents found in Young Living essential oils. Custom designed with ambient light control, and alternating 30-second on/off and continuous run settings, Young Living’s Home Diffuser can transform any space into a spa-like atmosphere.

The Dew Drop Diffuser functions as a humidifier, atomizer, and aroma diffuser in one simple-to-use product. Inspired by the purity and elegance of a drop of morning dew, the Dewdrop Diffuser’s design reflects Young Living’s dedication to providing high-quality essential oils. Its ultrasonic technology breaks any mixture of essential oils and water into millions of microparticles, disperses them into the air, and releases the constituents found in Young Living essential oils. Custom designed with up to four hours of continuous run diffusion, automatic shut-off, and ambient light control, Young Living’s Dewdrop Diffuser can transform any space into a spa-like atmosphere. The ultrasonic frequency generates waves at 1.7 million times per second, releasing essential oil molecules into the air to help create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere in your home or office.

The Rainstone Diffuser will be included in the $205 Premium Starter Kit price point.

Combining state-of-the-art ultrasonic technology and traditional Chinese craftsmanship, Young Living’s Rainstone™ Diffuser provides a balanced convergence of the grounding element of earth with the enveloping and soothing powers of essential oil-infused mist. Created with an exquisite and rare purple clay found only in a small region of China, each Rainstone Diffuser is handmade using ancient craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation for more than 1,000 years. The Rainstone requires 4-5 hours and dozens of hand-produced manufacturing steps to create--a skill set that requires at least three years of experience for each technician to perfect. Young Living’s Rainstone has a robust feature set, including continuous ultrasonic diffusion at 1.7 million waves per second; 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8 hour settings with automatic shutoff; five soft LED light settings (blue, yellow, purple, alternating each color, and off); a negative ionizer; and a remote control. The Rainstone’s elegant design and handcrafted artistry make it an exquisite piece of art to complement any décor and transform any space into an inviting, aroma-filled atmosphere.

The Aria Diffuser
will be included in the $260 Premium Starter Kit price point.
Young Living’s Aria Ultrasonic Diffuser is a unique, stylish way to bring the benefits of essential oils into your home or workplace. This system combines the latest in diffuser technology with a variety of useful features. The included remote lets you choose from a selection of soothing, built-in sounds, run time, or enjoy the multicolored LED lights. With the built-in speakers, you can plug in your own personal music device and enjoy the music of your choice. The Aria may be used daily to help create a peaceful, soothing environment wherever you need it most.

Direct Inhalation:
If you do not have a diffuser or would like a more intense experience (to wake up quickly, stop a coughing fit, ease a headache, stop nausea quickly, reduce anxiety, etc.), simply put a couple drops of your chosen oil in the palms of your hands, rub them together and cup them over your nose and mouth, breathing in and out until you experience relief.

Essential oils can be applied topically (to the skin) for a myriad of reasons. The molecules are tiny in comparison to fatty cooking oils and easily absorb into the skin, carrying their constituents with them without leaving any residue behind. Botanical oils such as Peppermint, Copaiba, and Wintergreen can be soothing to inflamed and sore bodies. Oils such as Lavender and Frankincense are gifted skin-lovers while favorites Bergamot and Ylang Ylang often replace expensive perfumes with their uplifting and feminine aromas. The uses for essential oils are extensive and extremely diverse. No two oils are exactly the same but most improve health and wellbeing in a variety of ways.

General Guidelines for Topical Use:
  • Test an area of skin for sensitivity before applying larger amounts more frequently
  • Properly dilute (see carrier oils below) certain essential oils to prevent skin sensitivity (ratios are included in the Essential Oil Pocket Reference)
  • Pour 2-3 drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand with the appropriate amount of carrier oil and apply to desired area

Carrier Oils
Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.

"Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying. Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life. Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!" Young Living Blogger

Carrier Oil Options
Always choose unrefined and/or organic as often as possible to reduce exposure to synthetic chemicals/toxins that may tamper with the purity of our essential oils.
  • V-6 -- proprietary Young Living formula combining fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil (contains a lot of vitamin E and acts as a natural preservative), sunflower oil, and olive oil
  • Jojoba -- ideal for skincare, especially the face because it's the least pore-clogging (see facial serum recipe)
  • Coconut -- ideal for skincare and DIY recipes as well as high in healthy fats (see body butter or lip balm), however unrefined coconut oil will turn solid in temperatures below 76 degrees.
  • Grapeseed -- low odor and ideal for topical use
  • Sweet Almond Oil -- low odor and ideal for topical use
  • Olive Oil -- odorous and best used for dietary use
  • Shea, Mango, and Cocoa Butter -- exceptional for DIY skincare recipes and topical use

Young Living has created a line of essential oils specifically labeled for dietary use. There are several options for soothing tummy troubles, enhancing beverages, and supporting overall health and wellness. You can ingest the oils in a few ways.
Encapsulate
It's really very simple. You will need size 00 vegetable capsules (either purchased from the accessories section of your Young Living account or from a nearby health food store). You will separate the two halves, setting the smaller half down. Then tip the essential oil bottle to the side and drop in the appropriate drops (2-3 is usually plenty depending on what you are trying to accomplish), matching them with an equal amount of carrier oil (see carrier oils in the Topical section above). Secure the two halves together and swallow with a large glass of water. If you want to make a week's worth of capsules at one time, store them in the freezer to keep them intact. Here is a video of me making a capsule!
Honey or Agave Nectar
Fill a teaspoon with honey or agave nectar and add your essential oil drops to the sweet spoonful before you toss it down the hatch. Drink plenty of water.

Beverage Enhancement
Thieves Tea is one of my all time favorite comforting beverages. It's my go-to when I'm feeling a little under the weather. The recipe is super simple but it's packed with delicious comfort..
1 mug of hot water or your tea of choice
2-3 drops Thieves Vitality
2-3 drops Lemon Vitality
1 Tbsp Honey or Agave Nectar
Stir frequently and enjoy!

When I'm not relaxing with a hot cup of tea, I am hustling through my crazy day and trying to remember to drink the recommended amount of water. I add a couple drops of one of my favorite citrus oils to my water for a boost of flavor and naturally occurring limonene antioxidant! No strange dyes, chemicals, or sweeteners necessary, just plain old awesome botanical oils bursting with concentrated flavor.
