"The skin is the largest organ of the body, and it performs a number of vital functions. It serves as a protective barrier against microorganisms. It helps shield the delicate, sensitive tissues underneath from mechanical and other injuries. It acts as an insulator against heat and cold, and helps eliminate body wastes in the form of perspiration. It guards against excessive exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun by producing a protective pigmentation, and it helps produce the body's supply of vitamin D. Its sense receptors enable the body to feel pain, cold, heat, touch, and pressure" medical-dictionary.com Our skin does so much for us (like literally keeps us from falling apart), so why shouldn't we care for it with the absolute best ingredients possible? Leave the toxins, fake fragrance and preservatives on the store shelf where they belong... First of all, the butters I use in this recipe have shelf lives up to 2 years and Young Living's essential oils will keep indefinitely when stored in a cool, dark place. Why we ever decided that preservatives and fake fragrances were needed in our personal care products is beyond logic. If you haven't used your body butter in two years, you will not likely use it ever. If you would rather use a lab-manufactured fragrance instead of the real thing, then by all means continue to do so, but I have found that most people prefer that which nature provides. Organic 4-Ingredient Whipped Body Butter - 8 oz 1/3 cup Unrefined Organic Coconut Oil 1/3 cup Unrefined Shea Butter (I love the Better Shea Butter brand, available on Amazon) 1/3 cup Pure Mango Butter (Better Shea Butter brand) 20 drops each (140 total drops): Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Myrrh, Patchouli, Gentle Baby, and Geranium; see more essential oil options in the graphic below Optional Add-Ins or Substitutes: Unrefined Cocoa Butter (Better Shea Butter brand) Directions: Soften your butters (if needed) for easier whipping. I like to use indirect heat by way of a double boiler or steamer and avoid the use of a microwave to preserve the naturally occurring nutrients found in the butters. Add the essential oil drops and then whip using a mixer for approximately 2 minutes. Body butter will be light, rich with skin-loving plant constituents, and aromatically delicious! Apply to clean and dry skin. Pat down with a damp towel before getting dressed to keep clothes from sticking.
