3-Ingredient Sugar Scrubs

A few months into my essential oil revolution, I grabbed the $20, "Eucalyptus Mint Sugar Scrub" by Bath & Body Works off the shelf in my shower and took a quick glance at the list of ingredients. As suspected, the list was lengthy. It was full of words that were hard to pronounce, very few of which included "Eucalyptus" and/or "Mint" and I immediately felt perplexed. Why were there so many ingredients? Were they necessary? More importantly, why did I voluntarily PAY for all those synthetic ingredients and slather the largest organ in my body (skin) with them without first asking these questions?  I set out to remedy this situation using some of my newly acquired skills and now I'm about to blow your scrub-lovin' minds.
The 3-Ingredient Sugar Scrub:
  • Organic Fine-Grain Sugar (some people us Turbinado Sugar for a very coarse scrub, but I prefer to gently exfoliate)
  • Carrier Oil of Choice: I prefer SunCoco Oil (a blend of sunflower & refined coconut oil) but many prefer sweet almond oil or jojoba oil -- coconut oil or jojoba oil will be the least pore-clogging of carrier oils.
  • 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (sure, Eucalyptus & Spearmint can be used if desired, but with Young Living's huge variety, the skin-loving options are limitless, so get creative!)

Here is a favorite trio of mine! I love incorporating a variety of essential oils to benefit from their combined talents. Lavender is soothing and rejuvenating, Lemon cleanses and detoxifies, and Ylang Ylang fights damage caused by aging and supports healthy skin.

Other great essential oils for sugar scrubs include, but are not limited to:
Frankincense
Myrrh
Patchouli
Sandalwood
Jasmine
Orange
Grapefruit
Clary Sage
Bergamot
Rose
Geranium
Tea Tree
Vetiver
Roman or German Chamomile
Gentle Baby Blend

Pore-Cleansing & Wrinkle-Fighting Trios include:
  • Frankincense, Myrrh, and Bergamot
  • Patchouli, Lavender, and Geranium
  • Roman or German Chamomile, Lemon, and Lavender
  • Sandalwood, Rose, and Grapefruit
  • Jasmine, Clary Sage, and Orange
  • Vetiver, Ylang Ylang, and Tea Tree
Let's Make One!
Directions:
  1. Scoop your sugar into your preferred storage container. I suggest using a glass mason jar and airtight container, especially when using citrus oils. Citrus oils can break down the chemicals in plastic over time and we don't want to lather our faces with such chemicals. Leave a small amount of space at the top of the jar.
  2. Pour the carrier oil on top of sugar and allow it to sink into the sugar. Stir and add more oil until you have reached the perfect amount of sugar to oil ratio. I personally like mine to be more oily than dry.
  3. Add your essential oils. A great mixing ratio is 5 drops per ounce of sugar & oil mix. For example, if you are making an 8 oz scrub, add up to 40 drops of your chosen essential oils.
  4. Carefully stir your sugar scrub mixture, seal, and use when needed. I use mine 3-4 times a week, but if you're not a regular scrubber, no worries! This sugar scrub is NATURALLY preserved and will last for months because of the antibacterial and anti-fungal consituents occurring in the essential oils.
