Welcome to Essential Living!
My name is Kelly, and I'm a Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP), Holistic Fitness Specialist, and full blown therapeutic grade essential oil enthusiast! I'm also the mother of 4 awesome kids (3 boys and 1 diva), and my husband, Lonnie, and I have been married for 13 years. I grew up as an Air Force brat (my father was in the Air Force) and we moved around the country many times before settling down in Grand Haven, Michigan. I have bachelor's degrees in Public Administration and Secondary Education. I'm a retired (3 year career) high school teacher and currently proudly own the job title of work-from-home mom. My oldest son, Cooper, is on the Autism Spectrum and my daughter was diagnosed with Talipes Equinovarus (clubfoot) in utero 7 years ago. In my "free time" I research the most recent holistic health, wellness and fitness modalities, including aromatherapy. I've developed a passion for sharing this knowledge with the world!
In 2011, we had what our family now refers to as "the awakening". My husband and I were in our 6th year of marriage, our 3 year old was officially diagnosed with Autism, my mother with breast cancer, our baby in utero with Talipes Equinovarus (Club Foot) and a heart valve defect. Then three days after her birth, my grandfather, the patriarch of our family, died rather suddenly from congestive heart failure. Health, wellness, and the importance of every single minute in a day consumed our every thought. In addition, our tedious financial state was now completely destroyed by medical bills.
At the time, I held a low-paying position teaching Junior/Senior English Lit at an area Charter School for at-risk youth. Most of my paycheck went to our daycare provider and the rest to medical insurance. My class of 40+ students turned to me for everything from passing state exams to drug addiction, suicide, and teen pregnancy. I gained 20 pounds in one year, drank nearly a bottle of wine a night, and truly reached a point of desperation in my attempt to understand how this had become my life.
Overworked. Desperate. Frustrated. Depressed. Hopeless. Exhausted. Unhealthy. Faithless. And out of control.
In a stroke of brilliant and divine intervention, I was laid off from my teaching position the summer of 2012 due to funding deficits. What initially felt like a death sentence quickly turned into the best opportunity God could have awarded me. I never would have willingly walked away from those kids, but the Universe knew I had to. My own kids needed me. My mother needed me. My husband needed me. I needed me.
I ran an in-home daycare with my kids and a few of their friends in an effort to make ends meet. In the time between story books and play-doh, I read. I read about autism, club foot, cancer, genetic factors, environmental factors, nutrition, alternative medications, holistic health, and anything I could get my hands on that did NOT involve prescription medications. My mother had undergone chemotherapy and a mastectomy. She was on the road to recovery, but everything had been destroyed. Cancer cells, healthy cells, it was all gone. Watching my mother become sick and seeing her bald, wiped out, and depressed, sent me over the edge. I wanted to fix this. All of this.
It turns out that the more you read, the more you really do learn. I'm glad I once shared that logic with my students! After learning about cell damage and congenital defects related to toxins in our environment, we overhauled our concept of "healthy" and began to detox our home. I started with our food: organic, local farms, non-GMO, the whole wheat germ enchilada. I continued on into focusing on nutrition gaps by eating clean and nutrient-rich superfoods (micronutrients), including supplements for common nutrient deficiencies frequently found in individuals with Autism. I learned about the burden of stress on a human body and then focused on self-care, taking up running as a healthy alternative to binge eating and wine guzzling. In no time, I felt alive again. My son's communication and language development drastically improved and we found ourselves pregnant with our 3rd of 4 children.
It was an awesome pregnancy. So much better than the two before it. We had our completely healthy child the day before my 33rd birthday but could only afford to take two weeks off from running the daycare to recover from my c-section. Exhausted and rundown, our family quickly spiraled into a frustrating cycle of illness. The new baby had an endless stream of daycare-induced viruses that always ended in double ear infections, loads of antibiotics, horrible side effects, and more trips to the pediatrician. It was during what would be his last ear infection that we welcomed my sister and her supply of Young Living Essential Oils for a visit.
For the first time in weeks, we all slept soundly for 8 hours. With a variety of essential oils pumping into the air, our symptoms quickly subsided. I woke feeling revived and excited to learn about the missing puzzle piece in our quest for overall health and wellness. It wasn't long before I was researching essential oil uses for everything.
Where had these mysterious miracle workers been all our lives?! It seemed ridiculous that we had just recently discovered them when using botanical oils was a centuries old, tried and true, wellness method. For the first time in years, I felt passion again. The kind that wakes you up in the morning filled with purpose and puts you to bed at night with a sense of accomplishment. The more I read, tried, and experienced, the more I wanted to share my story with the world. And I've been doing so every since!
This website is a compilation of the information I have learned about our essential oil-infused lifestyle as well as some details about other health and wellness related research. I've had the blessing of becoming an expert in the field and creating a career out of supporting others as they navigate essential oils themselves, regaining my title of "teacher". My family is blessed abundantly by Young Living and their dedication to clean, responsible, and effective products in both health and financial stability, and it's my mission to share this abundance with as many families as possible before my minutes are up.
Join me and the thousands of others who have discovered Young Living Essential Oils!
